FAQ
Legitimacy & Trustworthiness:
How can I be sure of the exhibition's credibility and that of Canadian Art Daily? There are many out there who exploit artists, as I'm sure you're aware.
We totally get why you'd be apprehensive and why it's crucial to make sure a platform's legit before diving in with your art and hard-earned cash. Let me tackle your points head-on and give you the peace of mind you're looking for. This is our second edition, building on the success of our inaugural Northern Visions Exhibition & Sale in 2024.
Established in 2019 by Jason Scott, a passionate devotee and collector of Canadian art, and his wife, Crystal Beshara, an accomplished artist, Canadian Art Daily has quickly become the premier online destination for anyone keen to explore the vibrant Canadian art landscape. To learn more about what makes "Canadian Art Daily" stand out and to explore the wealth of content we provide, head over to: this link.
Ever since our exciting journey began, "Canadian Art Daily" has been all about shining a spotlight on Canadian talent. With more than 32,000 people following our Instagram account - @canadian_art_daily - , it's easy to see that we're very involved in the Canadian art scene, engaging and celebrating with the community every day.
We're absolutely delighted to have teamed up with some fantastic Canadian galleries over the past few years! Big shout out to Mira Godard Gallery, Mayberry Fine Art, James Rottman Fine Art, Madrona Gallery, Coastal Peoples Gallery, and Gagne Contemporary, plus many others, for letting us help highlight their amazing artists and exhibitions.
Also, we got to team up with some great organizations to promote their awesome events like the "Toronto Outdoor Art Fair," "Wall Candy Expos & Events," and "The Petite Art Show."
The last five years have also given us the privilege of collaborating with many fantastic Canadian artists! Engaging with talents such as Jeff Dillon, Antony John, David Lidbetter, Peter Cheung, Jackie Bradshaw, Tom Sinclair, and many others has been a joy. Building trust and respect in the art community has been rewarding.
Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge our partnerships with industry leaders such as Joanne Poluch of Remarque Art Consulting, who played a pivotal role as a key sponsor of our 2024 online exhibition.
What we're really getting at is this: if top Canadian art leaders trust us, then you definitely can too.
Fees:
Why is there a submission fee?
A submission fee is common practice across many exhibition platforms and serves an important purpose. This fee covers the administrative costs of the application process. It pays for the time our selection committee and guest jurors spend reviewing each submission in detail, which can take days and many weeks and even months of work.
Charging a fee allows us to handle every application with the attention and fairness it deserves, ensuring an efficient and equitable selection process. The fees also help cover the hiring of professionals to build, design, and maintain a website interface for our online exhibition.
The process of uploading images, along with their descriptions and data for each artwork displayed, is not automated. These tasks are, in fact, meticulously carried out by a member of our team.
Please remember that at the core of this initiative are dedicated professionals, providing tailored support and engaging in meaningful communication with each artist and potential art collectors. Their invaluable contributions and time deserve appropriate compensation.
Ultimately, just as we believe every artist deserves to be remunerated for their work, we think the time and expertise required on our end should be as well.
Do I have to pay the fee for each piece of art I submit?
Yes, please note that the submission fee applies to each artwork entered: $30 for one piece, $35 for two, or $40 for three. This fee covers the review process for each submission but does not guarantee acceptance into the exhibition. We may select one, all, or none of the submitted pieces for inclusion in the sale.
How do I pay for my submission?
We've streamlined our application into a two-step process to make it super efficient and to guarantee your submissions are handled with care.
Submission Payments:
You can make your payment safely and securely by credit card on our website.
Artwork Submission:
Our platform currently has some limitations, one of which is the inability to accept image attachments directly alongside your payment. To work around this, we kindly ask you to attach your artwork photos to the payment receipt you receive via email from Squarespace. Simply hit "forward" to that email, attach all the entries (in the proper format) that you’ve paid for, and forward it back to us at this email adress: info@canadianartdaily.com . Doing it this way helps us perfectly match your payment, artist info, and artwork photos. It's a really simple step that is meant to prevent mix-ups and ensure that every submission gets the attention it truly deserves.
Is my submission fee refunded if I’m not accepted for the exhibition?
The submission fee is an administrative charge, meaning it's non-refundable and won't be returned if the application doesn't succeed.
Do you take a commission on sales?
Yes. The commission breakdown is simple: Canadian Art Daily takes a 30% commission, while the artist keeps the remaining 70% of their sales.
Why are you charging both a submission fee and a commission on sales? Shouldn’t it be one or the other?
We believe this method strikes a good balance between initial costs and motivating us to boost sales, which helps keep the exhibition high-quality and financially sound. The submission fee helps pay for organisational expenses like paying the jurors and keeping the digital platform running. It also makes sure only serious applicants apply. The 30% sales commission gives us a strong reason to actively market and sell your art.
Will artists be eligible for CARFAC exhibition fees?
With our understanding of the CARFAC Fee Schedule 2024, particularly the nuances of Sections A.1.3, A.1.7, and A.3.1, it's evident how these provisions apply to various exhibition contexts. Our stance has always been strongly in favor of supporting artists' rights and ensuring they are fairly compensated for their work. This perspective informs our approach to interpreting these guidelines.
Given the specifics of the Northern Visions exhibition, which is primarily focused on the sale of art, the event aligns with the criteria described in Section A.1.7. This section thoughtfully sets the parameters for exhibitions where art is available for sale, distinguishing them from the 'public exhibition' scenarios outlined in other parts of the schedule.
Therefore, under these guidelines, artists participating in Northern Visions will not be eligible for CARFAC fees. The exhibition's sales emphasis places it outside the qualifying conditions for such compensation, as defined by the CARFAC Fee Schedule. This conclusion is drawn with our deep respect and advocacy for the rights and financial well-being of artists.
Eligibility:
Who can apply?
You need to be at least 18 years old and live in Canada to enter.
Do I need to be a Canadian citizen?
You don't need to be a Canadian citizen to join our exhibition. Just living in Canada is enough. Whether you are a permanent resident, a student, or here on a work permit, we're thrilled to welcome your contributions!
What if I’m a Canadian living abroad?
Unfortunately, living abroad means you won't be able to participate this time, as the event is only for Canadian residents. Managing orders and shipments from multiple countries adds complications that we’re unable to accommodate at the moment.
Submission Rules:
Is the theme only about landscapes, or can we submit other kinds of work too? Will artists who usually focus on different topics or styles still have their work looked at?
Absolutely! Canada's diversity is what makes our theme so exciting. Art is about unique self-expression, and we welcome all interpretations. From breathtaking landscapes and cultural symbols to personal stories, abstract ideas, or unique views of Canada whether positive or challenging - we're keen to see everything and hearing your stories. Your creativity and individuality will make this exhibition truly special.
Why aren't you taking submissions for sculpture, ceramics, fibre art, digital art, or photography?
We deeply value all forms of artistic expression and understand the importance of showcasing diverse mediums. While our current focus is on specific types of artwork, this decision allows us to maintain a clear direction and provide the best support for the artists we work with. That said, we’re always evaluating how we can expand in the future to include a broader range of art forms. We truly appreciate your understanding and hope to explore these mediums in time!
I know the size limit is 48"x 36", but I have a painting that is a bit bigger (48"x 48") and would be a perfect fit for the exhibition. Would you still consider it if I submitted it?
Unfortunately, we have to stick to the 48 x 36" size limit for submissions. I'm truly sorry we can't accommodate your piece this time around.
I have a work that is a diptych with 2 panels, each 22” x 15”. Is this considered two separate pieces?
If the paintings are reliant on each other and the artwork is essentially one painting spread across two panels—and, for instance, it was for the most part conceived this way as well—we would consider this ONE painting. If, however, it is two paintings that could stand alone or be exhibited alone, then please submit them as two separate pieces.
Why can’t I submit a piece that is based on someone else's photo?
The essence of our guideline is to ensure that all artworks showcased in our exhibition are born from the artist's direct experience and creativity. When a painting is based on another person's photograph, even with significant artistic alterations, it can raise issues of originality and potential copyright complications, especially when the artwork is to be sold.
Can my submission be based on a photo that I took to use as a reference?
Yes, provided that you, as the artist, are the original photographer of the reference image.
What if someone else took the photo, like a friend or a family member, and I had their permission to use it?
Submissions will be disqualified if they are based on photographs not personally taken by the artist. All artwork must be the original creation of the submitting artist.
Ooops! I only paid for one entry but I wanted to enter more than one!
You can submit up to three (3) pieces at a time. Unfortunately, we do not have the infrastructure to refund application fees for submission errors so PLEASE only pay for and submit artwork you are sure about. If you want to submit more, you will simply go through the application process on the website and pay the fee again. Keep in mind that even if you submit multiple times, we'll select a maximum of three (3) pieces for the exhibition, if you're chosen.
Can I submit artwork that is currently in a gallery or for sale on my website?
Yes, you are welcome to submit your artwork. However, akin to a gallery's requirement for exclusive rights to sell your artwork while on display, once your artwork is accepted into our exhibition, you must make it exclusively available for purchase through CanadianArtDaily.ca until the exhibition concludes. This means that you will need to remove the artwork from all other sales platforms, including your website and those of other galleries it may appear on. From the moment of acceptance, through the jurying process, and throughout the public exhibition and sale period, Canadian Art Daily will serve as the exclusive agent for the accepted artwork. This exclusivity ends at midnight on the last day of the sale. It’s important to note that any violation of this rule will result in the immediate disqualification and removal of the artwork from the exhibition. The offending artist also risks being barred from future exhibitions.
I want to submit a piece that just got accepted to be featured in an art magazine; would it still be eligible?
Yes, as long as the artwork remains available for purchase during the exhibition.
How do I upload my artwork to the entry form?
Currently, your artwork images cannot be uploaded through the payment/application page. After you submit your payment, you will receive a confirmation email from SquareSpace (the payment processing company). Please attach your images (limited to one image per artwork, up to a maximum of three pieces of art) to that same confirmation e-mail and then forward it to us at: info@canadianartdaily.com
Shipping:
Who covers the shipping costs for artwork sold to clients in Canada?
The artist pays for shipping on sold artwork. It's recommended to add shipping costs, usually between $30 and $100 for smaller works, into the price. Alternatively, artists can offer direct delivery or allow buyers to pick up the artwork themselves.
How does international shipping work?
For international purchase inquiries (from clients outside Canada), we'll contact you (the artist) to discuss the next steps. We'll also inform the buyer about any extra fees they might have to pay.
What's the timeframe for shipping my artwork once it's sold?
Artwork must be shipped or personally delivered within 7 days after sale confirmation is received.
Are there any specific packing requirements?
The artist must ensure that the artwork is professionally packaged in a way that offers sufficient protection.
Which shipping company should I use?
The choice of carrier ultimately rests with the artist. While we suggest Canada Post or SnapShip for their reliability, artists are free to select any courier service that they prefer.
Do I need a tracking number for my shipment?
Yes, artists must track all shipments to guarantee delivery.
What happens if the artwork is damaged upon arrival?
In the end, it's up to the artist to make sure the artwork reaches the client safely. That's why getting shipping insurance that matches the artwork's value is a smart move.
